Abu Dhabi
If you're considering a move to Abu Dhabi, welcome to one of the safest, cleanest, and most cosmopolitan cities in the world. As the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi offers a unique blend of modern urban living, rich cultural heritage, and access to world-class amenities. But like any international move, relocating here comes with its own set of questions. Whether you're making the move for work, family, or a new adventure, this guide will help you settle in smoothly and confidently.

Why Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi is more than just oil wealth and futuristic architecture—it’s a city that values order, safety, and culture. It’s home to over 200 nationalities, making it an incredibly diverse place to live. Compared to its glitzier neighbor Dubai, Abu Dhabi offers a slightly quieter, more refined lifestyle, but with just as many opportunities.

01
Cost of living
Abu Dhabi isn’t a budget destination, but your money often goes further than you might expect thanks to tax-free salaries.
Here’s a quick snapshot of typical expenses:
- Accommodation: Your biggest cost. Rent varies widely depending on location, size, and amenities. Expect to pay AED 60,000–100,000+ per year for a one-bedroom apartment.
- Utilities: Electricity and water bills are generally affordable, but keep in mind summer AC use can spike your bill.
- Groceries: Imported goods can be pricey, but local products and fresh produce are quite reasonable.
- Transport: Taxis and ride-sharing apps are plentiful. Public transport is growing, but most residents prefer to drive.
02
Where to live: Popular expat areas
Most expats live in high-rise apartments or villa communities. Popular areas include:
- Al Reem Island– Modern apartments, sea views, close to downtown.
- Khalifa City– Family-friendly villas with good schools nearby.
- Saadiyat Island – Upmarket and home to cultural landmarks like the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
- Corniche Area– Central location with beach access and city vibes.
- Masdar- A futuristic, sustainable development that is close to the airport yet feels a million miles from the hustle and bustle.
- Yas Island- if you want to be at the heart of all the action, Yas island is where you will find all of the big attractions. From Yas Marina circuit where the F1 is held annually, and the stunning Yas Marina to be seen at to the world class Yas Links Golf course along Yas Waterworld, Warner Brothers Studios and SeaWorld.
Pro tip: Always search with a reputable, trusted agent like Savills or online searches such as Bayut will be a help in finding suitable accommodation in the UAE.

Getting around
Abu Dhabi offers a huge variety of transport options. Each has its benefits and depending on your budget and needs, you will easily find the right answer for you.

- Car Purchase- If you are relocating longer term, then owning your own car will most likely suit you. Second hand cars are readily available through expat sales sites on social media, or through word of mouth from expats who are leaving. Be sure to understand how to register a car and keeping it roadworthy to avoid fines being issued.

-Abu Dhabi's public bus system provides extensive coverage across the city and surrounding areas. To access a map of the bus routes, it's best to use the Darb website or app, which allows users to plan routes, view schedules, and see real-time bus locations. You can also find route information and maps on the ITC website. Cash is not accepted and a pre-paid card is used to pay for the fare. These can be purchased at vending machines or on the website.

-Taxis in Abu Dhabi are readily available, reasonably priced, and can be hailed on the street, booked by phone, or through apps. The official Abu Dhabi taxi hotline is 600535353, and the Abu Dhabi Taxi app is also available for booking. Street taxis are silver with a yellow roof sign, and many drivers speak English.
